An escape room advent calendar in book form: 24 puzzle evenings, one letter every night, and a night train that runs on Christmas Eve only if your table has all twenty-four letters right.

Hollowpine Halt has been under snow for eight days. The night train stands under a tarpaulin, the valley is waiting for it, and the line between may not be released by anybody who does not know the signal codes. Amos Whitlock knows them. He has been the station agent here for forty years and he wrote down every report of his life in code, and he is lying in the section house with a fever. From tonight on you are the night crew.

How one evening runs
  • Open the day that is due. Story and puzzle come first, the document of the day is the last page of the day, always on the right
  • Solve the puzzle. A signal word always comes out of it
  • Look that signal word up on the signal board and read off its two digit cell number
  • First digit is the row, second is the column in the code table of the day. That cell holds your day letter
  • Write the letter into today's cell of the key strip on page 13. Twenty-four evenings, twenty-four letters

Built for a table with different ages
  • Every day carries a junior track that reaches the same signal word by a shorter road. It is not a substitute task: whoever solves it has solved the day, and the table carries on with that result
  • Four roles: Keykeeper, Mapmaker, Cipher and Timekeeper. Hand them around as often as you like
  • On five evenings, the December 24 finale included, a box says ALL FOUR TOGETHER and splits the work between the four roles. One person can take every part alone; it simply takes longer
  • Two people are enough: each takes two roles and works them one after the other
  • A read aloud box that never gives the solution away, so the reader plays along
  • A practice evening before December 1 with nothing hidden, so nobody learns the system on the first night

When you get stuck
Every day has a tip in the junior box, printed upright, and two hints at the foot of the puzzle page, printed turned around: you have to turn the book to read them, so you do not read them by accident. Neither hint names the solution. At the back, every day has its full walkthrough written out step by step, plus a troubleshooting page that tracks down one wrong letter without repeating twenty-four evenings.

As a family advent calendar it puts twenty-four puzzles where the chocolate usually is: stamp rows, letter fields, word ladders, grids, logic puzzles and ciphers to break, each one ending in a signal word. 126 pages, 6 x 9 inches, black and white, ages 8 and up. Two stencils sit on a cut-out sheet at the back, used on December 13 and on December 24. On the last evening the book checks itself along two roads that know nothing of each other, so it needs no online solution checker.

Bonus to this book:

Four more escape-evenings at Hollowpine Halt with a third stencil, and a night crew folder with the key strip as a single sheet, four role cards and a blank departure certificate.
